Introduction
The recent Cross Government Action Plan on Sexual Violence and Abuse
states that 'Sexual Violence and Childhood Sexual Abuse' are two of
the most damaging crimes in our society' and that '21% of girls and
11% of boys' experience some form of child sexual abuse and 23% of
women and 3% of men experience sexual violence as an adult'.
Despite years of campaigning sexual violence still continues to be a
taboo subject, enmeshed in a host of societal myths that prevent
victims from reporting these crimes, getting the support they require
and the justice they deserve. Services for victims/survivors remains a
postcode lottery with many unable to access any specialised support.
Conviction rates for rape are at an all time low of 5.3%.
The Women's Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre (Cornwall) has been providing
specialised support services for victims/survivors of sexual violence
for over 10 years and in January 2007, through the Home Office's 'Gold
Star Award', was recognised as an ' Exemplar Project' and funded to
roll out its ' Good Practice' across the South West.
The aims of this conference are to share information about recent
developments in policy and share good practice regarding the provision
of effective community led services for victims/survivors.
Purpose of Conference
* Understand the reality of the problems facing victims and survivors
* Understand the main aims of the Government's Sexual Violence and
Abuse Action Plan and Implementation Guidelines
* Explore good practice in the development and delivery of services to
those who have experienced sexual violence in the South West
* Explore a multi-agency approach to delivering effective services for
victims/survivors
* Launch WRSAC's newly NOCN Accredited Training Programmes for
professionals, support workers and volunteers working in the field of
sexual violence.
