Addressing Inequalities in Education
Empowering BME communities to assert their rights

A Public Seminar

Thursday 6th December 2007 from 10am - 3pm
Paul Robeson Theatre, CentreSpace, Treaty Centre, High Street,
Hounslow, Middlesex TW3 1ES

Research shows fewer young Asian women (Indian, Pakistani and
Bangladeshi) compared to Asian males participate in higher education.
At the same time young Asian women who do participate in higher
education (including primary and secondary) are not passively
accepting the racial, violent and sexual harassment which are a daily
part of their 'educational' life.

Experiences of Black youth in the education system is framed in the
language of 'alienation, isolation, exclusion or integration' while
the education curriculum excludes the experiences of black students,
the racism of educational resources, and the racist and sexist culture
in educational bodies goes unchallenged.

As the number of students being excluded and the racist incidents in
schools continues to rise, the focus for action has to be on opening
up discussion and opposing the reactionary institutions and
individuals promoting racist and sexist ideas, practices and policies.
This seminar provides a unique chance to reflect on what role
education plays for Black students and plans for action.

Who is the seminar for?

Teachers, Community Workers, Youth groups and Youth workers including
young women's groups, Anti racist organisations, Statutory and
Voluntary bodies committed to meeting the needs of Black youth.
Organisations responsible for putting into practice education policies
and delivering education and youth services, groups and organisations
supporting Black families.

Organised by the London Development Education Centre, Azad London (The
Asian Health Agency) and CEN (Communities Empowerment Network).
