London Councils provided funding of £30,000 to recruit a disabled
consultant to consult with user led deaf and disability organisations
in London to find out what types of services are needed, how the new
organisation should be structured and what it should do.

The key findings of the consultation and the consultant's final
recommendations are available here:

London Councils is now taking steps to create the new organisation in
line with the consultant's recommendations.

London Councils Grants Committee agreed in February 2008 to provide
£15,000 start up funding to the organisation to:
* Retain a Disabled Consultant to provide impartial expert advice and
support
* Draft and agree Memorandum and Articles
* Register Organisation with Companies House / Charity Commission
* Recruit and interview interim Board Members
* Recruit Chief Executive
* Develop a draft business plan
* Apply for funding on behalf of the new Organisation
* Secure premises
* Officially launch the organisation

The steering group continues to meet and will be providing advice on
the content of the memorandum and articles of association, 5 key
principles for the organisation to promote and the launch of the new
organisation in September 2008.

London Councils Grants Committee has agreed to provide up to £285,000
funding per year for four years to the new London Wide Organisation
for Deafness and Disability to help it to develop into a strong
healthy organisation that is able to provide the services that its
users want. London Councils will be working closely with the new
organisation to support its development.
