Charity Commission updates governance guidelines

The Charity Commission has re-asserted the importance of financial
prudence and accountability in its updated guidance on good
governance, published today.

The Hallmarks of an Effective Charity clarifies the six key principles
of well-governed charities:
* A clear purpose and direction
* A strong board
* Structures and procedures that are 'fit-for-purpose'
* A commitment to learning and improving
* To be financially sound and prudent
* Adherence to accountability and transparency.

"What separates the best charities from the rest is the quality of
their governance," said Dame Suzi LEather, chair of the comission.
"Hallmarks has an excellent track record among charities as a
practical tool for reviewing and enhancing their effectiveness. These
updated Hallmarks ensure the relevance of this guidance."

Charities can download the new document (CC10) from the Commission's
