(Posted at http://womensgrid.freecharity.org.uk/?p=921)
Venue: Hamilton House, Central London
Date: 29th Octobor, 2008
Time: 9.30-16.30
Behind Closed Doors
Social Vision opens its Third Annual Conference on Abuse of Women and
Domestic Violence. A forum of ideas, interactive and innovative
dialogue to explore the causes of violence; to find solutions; to
share knowledge and facilitate best practices; to explore how a
multi-agency approach may optimise available resources, ensuring
gender security
The speakers will address current developments in legal reforms and
policy issues; gender safety in policing contexts and existing
problems for victims. Our conference's expert panel will examine
implications in the light of the Pemberton review. This is a
significant development as it will reshape the process of future
investigations and examine the shortcomings in the current policing
system.
Abuse of women: diverse and ethnic groups
The conference highlights and analyses the differentiation, the causes
and consequences of domestic violence in diverse ethnic groups.
Women in Islamic Societies: Institutionalisation of Shari'a Iaw,
Victims, Islam and Criminal Justice.
The discussions will focus on the status of women in Islamic
Societies; engage in a debate regarding underage marriages, the
culturally sanctioned norms of polygamous marriages and the
inter-relationship with domestic violence- gender rights or cross
cultural difficulties in reporting and prosecuting cases of domestic
violence. A separate case study on Bangladeshi women, will be
presented, from the perspective of culture, law and immigration. An
outline will be discussed on the relationship between Islamic
radicalism and domestic violence.
