Spotting Sexism: A Crash Course In Feminism, October 2008

Have you ever been chatting with mates about the pay gap, and someone
pipes up: "Why should a business have to employ women, if they just go
and get pregnant?" You know it's wrong, but you're not sure how to
argue the case effectively...

Did you ever open an email from a colleague, only to find a sexist,
homophobic joke? You want to challenge them, but know that they'll
just say lighten up...

Have you ever popped down to the GP for contraception, and found
yourself feeling judged and uncomfortable - and you're not sure why?

Or maybe you've joined a feminist group, and read feminist blogs, but
sometimes it seems like you need an advanced gender studies degree to
understand all the jargon!

Spotting Sexism could be for you. It's a four-week online crash course
in feminism, and how it applies in our lives. Learn what all that
jargon means, and many of the key ideas in feminism today.

The course involves:
* Weekly 2-hour group phone-based sessions:
1. Facilitated conversations on key topics, such as: unpicking the
sexism in our daily lives & in the media, how sexism affects different
groups of women, and suggestions for feminist activism
2. Guest speakers
3. A safe space to ask difficult questions, where it's OK to make
mistakes or just not quite understand what 'patriarchy' is
4. Activities tailored to help draw out your knowledge and experiences
* A private online community forum, just for participants
* Extra resources, reading lists and ideas for taking what we discover
further.

If you're ready to spend three hours a week, to finally answer those
feminist questions, click here for application details or email us if
you have any questions. Places are limited. Open to all. Registration
closes on 25 September.

How much does it cost? £20-£5 per person, on a sliding scale.

Dates: 7.30pm-9.30pm on Wednesdays 1, 8, 15 and 22 October. There will
also be a feedback session on 29 October.
