The Yapp Charitable Trust - Grants For Small Charities
The Yapp Charitable Trust makes small grants, for running costs and
salaries, to small registered charities in England and Wales to help
sustain their existing work.
The Trustees decided to concentrate on sustaining existing work, after
we asked our applicants what type of funding they found most difficult
to raise. Most people said the biggest problem is finding money to
keep work going once it can no longer be described as new, even though
it is effective and is still needed. As a small grant-maker we
cannot do everything, so we concentrate on sustaining work that has
proved its worth. We make a grant when other funding is coming to an
end.
If you are looking for money to start a new project, to create a new
paid post or to introduce extra services you should look elsewhere.
Many other funders prefer to fund new developments.
What we fund
We make grants to small registered charities to sustain their existing
work with:
* elderly people
* children and young people aged 5 - 25
* people with disabilities or mental health problems
* people trying to overcome life-limiting problems of a social, rather
than medical, origin - such as addiction, relationship difficulties,
abuse, a history of offending
We also make grants to sustain small registered charities' existing
work in the fields of:
* education and learning (with a particular interest in people who are
educationally disadvantaged, whether adults or children)
We are not able to fund work which does not come into one of the above
categories
Size and type of grant
We give grants for running costs and salaries for up to three years.
Grants are normally for a maximum of £3,000 per year.
Most of our grants are for more than one year because we give priority
to ongoing needs.
Like most other funders we have many more applications than we can
fund. We find we are able to give a grant to only about 1 in 8 of
the applications we receive. In 2009 we expect to give £300,000 in
about 50 grants.
Criteria
Within our charitable objects, the Trustees focus on making grants to
small charities registered and working in England and Wales.
Applicants must have a total expenditure budget of less than £60,000 a
year for the whole charity.
We concentrate on sustaining existing work rather than funding new
work because many funders prefer new projects. We make a grant when
other funding is coming to an end.
If you are looking for money to start a new project, to create a new
paid post or to introduce extra services you should look elsewhere.
Many other funders prefer to fund new developments.
We are happy to fund the core costs of small charities whose work
falls totally within our objects.
The Trustees give priority to charities:
* tackling work that is unattractive to the general public or
unpopular with other funders
* helping to improve the lives of marginalised, disadvantaged or
isolated people
able to demonstrate effective use of volunteers.
In practice only charities whose work meets at least one of the above
priorities are likely to receive a grant.
Application Process
We have a simple application form which we ask you to send in by post,
together with a copy of your most recent annual report and accounts
and any other information you wish to send.
Applications are processed continuously. When we receive your
application we will be in touch, usually within 2 weeks -
* to ask for more information
* or to tell you the application will be going forward to the next
stage of assessment and give an idea of when you can expect a decision
* or to let you know we can't help
The time it takes to process an application and make a grant is
usually between two months and six months. We always write to let you
know the decision. The next grant-making meeting will be in early
March 2009.
Previous Applicants
We will accept an application only once each year and you can have
only one grant at a time from us.
Current grant-holders may make a new application when their grant is
coming to an end.
If we refused your last application you must wait a year before
applying again.
The application form and guidelines can be downloaded from this
website or obtained from our administrator.
Phone or email if you prefer to receive a pack by post.
Electronic forms are available in Word (for those who like to fill in
forms on a computer) and in pdf format (for those who prefer to fill
in forms by hand). Use the eligibility check before downloading. The
pack is also available from the administrator in large print.
Eligibility Check
We receive a surprising number of application forms from groups that
do not meet our basic eligibility criteria.
About 60% are from charities whose annual expenditure is above our
upper limit, 25% are from charities seeking funding to start something
new and 10% are from groups that are not registered charities.
It takes time to prepare an application so before you download and
complete an application form please answer the following questions -
* Has your charity been operating for at least three years? Yes No
* Does your charity have its own charity registration number? Yes No
* Does your charity normally spend less than £60,000 each year on all
its work? Yes No
If you answered yes to all three questions your charity is probably
eligible to apply to us but you still need to think about what you are
seeking money for -
Does your work fit within the list of things we can fund
http://www.yappcharitabletrust.org.uk/html/whatwefund.html? Yes No
Does what you are seeking money for appear in the list of things we do
not fund http://www.yappcharitabletrust.org.uk/html/donotfund.html?
Yes No
Uncertain? At times the answer to some of the above questions is not a
straightforward yes or no. If so look at the page headed Questions. In
there we have answered many of the questions people ask frequently.
But if the answer is not there click on email to send your query or
phone our administrator on 01484 683403.
Sure you are eligible? Download an application pack by clicking on
either of the two versions. The Word version can be saved and filled
in on computer then printed, the pdf version has to be printed first
then filled in by hand. The application pack begins with guidelines
for you to read. The last four pages are the application form.
