Challenging Demand 3
A one-day conference to challenge the demand from men for the
exploitation of women and children through pornography, sexualisation
and sexual violence.
Friday, 6th March, 2009
9.30am - 4.00pm
Teacher Building, 14 St Enoch Square,Glasgow
This conference is the third in a series of events, which previously
have considered the extent and impact of men's demand for commercial
sexual exploitation.The previous 'Challenging Demand'conferences in
May 2006 and October 2007 encouraged debate on a range of issues,
including the need to:
Actively challenge men's demand to buy sex in prostitution.
Highlight the fact that pornography and prostitution are not just
closely linked but, to a large extent, inseparable.
Review the research undertaken by the Women's Support Project into
the attitudes of men who buy sex.
Discuss contemporary Feminism in a Porn Culture.
Reflect on sex(ism), identity and intimacy in a pornographic culture
This year's event will look at:
The sexualisation of children through pornography and the media.
A social network analysis of pornographic internet sites.
The issue of extreme pornography,and the Scottish Government's
proposals to legislate on this.
A debate on Child Protection and the implications of viewing
pornography.

Child Protection: The Implications of viewing Pornography - A debate
Information -What are the legal aspects?
Interpretation -What could this mean for Social work and child
protection?
Implications and Impact -What can this mean for relationships,
families and communities?
The pornification and exploitation of children and young people
Rebecca Whisnant - Assistant Professor of Philosophy, University of
Dayton, Ohio, author, and founder member of the U.S. National Feminist
Movement Against Pornography.
Networking and information sharing session
The underpinning approach of the conference is making connections,
consolidating partnerships, considering interventions and increasing
networks.
To support this, the conference will have a session specifically
focused on networking, linking up, consultation and needs assessment
as well as documentary programme viewing. This will include some
interactive elements and the chance for agencies to highlight what
would support this work and promote what they can offer. More
information on this session will be forwarded prior to the event.

Costs
This conference is offered for free but a fee of £50 will be payable
if you do not notify us in advance of your non-attendance. (This
should be by 27th February.)

Evaluation
We want to capture as much of the impact and learning from the event
as possible and so hope to carry out a 3-phase evaluation - including
a survey pre-event, a questionnaire on the day and a follow up survey
link after the event. We would also like to do some short follow up
interviews with delegates after the event.
