NCVO among members of EU 'super-umbrella body'

European Network of National Associations will share expertise

The NCVO has played a leading role in forming a new body of 15 European third
sector umbrella bodies that will tackle issues affecting voluntary organisations
in the European Union.

The European Network of National Associations, which was launched this week,
will share experiences of the recession and good practice in capacity building.
It will also work on developing a European charter, similar to the UK's Compact,
which would ensure all voluntary sector bodies had good relationships and
recognition within the EU.

In response to a joint bid from the NCVO and Polish umbrella body OFOP, the
European Commission has given Enna a £12,000 grant to hold two events for member
bodies over the next 12 months. The first will take place in Warsaw in November,
another will be hosted in London in March 2010. The agendas for the events have
yet to be agreed.

Enna comprises the NCVO and umbrella bodies from Austria, Cyprus, Estonia,
Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Northern Ireland, Poland, Portugal,
Romania, Scotland and Slovenia.

Stuart Etherington, chief executive of the NCVO, said it was a critical time for
the voluntary sector across Europe. "It is all the more crucial that we have
come together to share experiences and look for ways to deliver far reaching
benefits to communities across the union," he said.
