National Domestic Violence Conference:

“Safeguarding partners and children”
Thursday 26th November, Central London

Dear Colleague,

We would like to invite you to a national conference on safeguarding partners
and children who are victims or witnesses of domestic violence. The conference
is being run in partnership with the Local Government Association, Refuge and
the YWCA.

Tackling domestic violence has become a national priority in recent years and is
now high on the Government's agenda. Although recent campaigns have been
successful in drawing attention to the alarming fact that one in four women in
the UK are victims of physical abuse at some point during their lives, the
magnitude of the problem that still exists in the UK is very apparent with two
women dying each week as a direct result. Furthermore, the presence of children
in the household is associated with nearly double the risk of domestic violence
for women.

Children who live with domestic violence typically know it is happening; in
family households where domestic violence occurs 90% of children witness it and
50% of that group are abused themselves.

* How best to safeguard partners and children who are victims or witnesses of
domestic violence
* The most recent police strategy in tackling perpetrators of domestic violence
* Practical ideas on developing initiatives in schools to educate children
* What services are needed / what has been done so far / what still needs to be
done
* Addressing the issue of the relationship between mothers and children in the
aftermath of domestic violence
* Links between domestic violence, teenage pregnancy and sexual violence
