HOME, MOSQUE AND STREET:
MUSLIM WOMEN AND URBAN DESIGN
London Women and Planning Forum Seminar
Wednesday 24 June 2009 1.30 - 5.30
Queen Mary, University of London
This half-day seminar focuses on Muslim women and their experiences of the built
environment, particularly in London. Exploring religious, domestic and 'public'
spaces, the seminar will address the ways in which Islamic design principles
affect the everyday lives of Muslim women. It will also consider how planners,
architects and urban designers can meet the needs of Muslim women from different
communities and backgrounds and discuss how Muslim women working in these fields
envisage urban change.
1.30 - registration; tea/coffee
1.45 - welcome: Alison Blunt, QMUL and LWPF
2.00 - Salmar Samar Damluji - architect and writer on Islamic design and
mudbrick architecture in the Yemen
Samar will discuss the organisation of space under Islamic design principles,
with specific reference to the position of women and the role of the mosque in
urban space, and will explain the historical and political reasons behind them.
2.30 - Barbra Wallace - Director, Women's Design Service
Barbra will address the Islamic notions of 'mahran' and 'na-mahran' and their
implications for Muslim women and urban design, whereby spaces are
differentiated in terms of who interacts within them rather than in terms of
'public' and 'private.'
3.00 - break
3.15 - Barara Disney - Commissioning Manager, Older People, London Borough of
Tower Hamlets
Focusing on Sonali Gardens (an extra care sheltered housing scheme for Asian
Elders in Shadwell, which opened in 2004), Barbara will discuss the housing
needs, design and provision for older Muslim women in Tower Hamlets.
3.45 - Imogen Wallace - Department of Geography, Queen Mary, University of
London
Drawing on her PhD research on home as a site of (in)security for Muslim women
in London and Bristol, Imogen will discuss her participants' experiences of
Islamophobia and how these experiences affect their everyday geographies and
relationships to home.
4.15 - Discussant: Claire Dwyer - Department of Geogaphy, University College
London
4.30 - Discussion
5.15 - Drinks reception
The seminar fee is £25 and £10 for concessions. Payable on the day in cash in
