The Olympics and faith communities – 2012 and beyond; opportunities
and challenges
Registration from 9.45am
Event from 10.15am (prompt) to 12.15pm with introduction by Duncan
Green, Community Relations Faith Advisor for the London Organising
Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
This event is FREE and will be followed by a networking lunch
This is an introduction to the opportunities and challenges offered by
the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As the months and years pass,
the London Olympics and Paralympics will loom ever larger in our
lives. The Games themselves will be the largest festival that any of
us are likely to experience in our lifetimes, and much has been talked
about the potential to transform communities – not just in the
immediate vicinity of the Games’ venues, but across London – and the
country. To make this work will require the active engagement of
communities and individuals across London, yet many questions still
remain.
This event is targeted at local faith communities and faith community
organisations who have not yet had a chance to find out about how the
games may affect them and their work. Among the themes we will
examine will be:
ä Games-related jobs and contracts,
ä Volunteering before, during and after the games,
ä Enhancing community sports and physical activity programmes,
ä The Cultural Olympiad – supporting cultural activities,
ä Chaplaincy, hosting and welcoming activities,
ä Physical legacy – housing, neighbourhoods & infrastructure.
