The Olympics and faith communities – 2012 and beyond; opportunities
and challenges

Registration from 9.45am

Event from 10.15am (prompt) to 12.15pm with introduction by Duncan
Green, Community Relations Faith Advisor for the London Organising
Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

This event is FREE and will be followed by a networking lunch

This is an introduction to the opportunities and challenges offered by
the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As the months and years pass,
the London Olympics and Paralympics will loom ever larger in our
lives. The Games themselves will be the largest festival that any of
us are likely to experience in our lifetimes, and much has been talked
about the potential to transform communities – not just in the
immediate vicinity of the Games’ venues, but across London – and the
country. To make this work will require the active engagement of
communities and individuals across London, yet many questions still
remain.

This event is targeted at local faith communities and faith community
organisations who have not yet had a chance to find out about how the
games may affect them and their work. Among the themes we will
examine will be:
ä Games-related jobs and contracts,
ä Volunteering before, during and after the games,
ä Enhancing community sports and physical activity programmes,
ä The Cultural Olympiad – supporting cultural activities,
ä Chaplaincy, hosting and welcoming activities,
ä Physical legacy – housing, neighbourhoods & infrastructure.

Faith Community Action – an information and networking event

This will be an opportunity for all faith groups involved in social
and community activity to find out how they can extend or improve
current projects, start new ones, and learn from each others'
experiences.

This is a half-day conference, lunch will be included and the event is
FREE. You can choose two practical workshops from a range of topics
which are still to be finalised but will include a selection of the
following:
— Finding funding
— Assessing needs in your community
— Developing your idea
— Advocacy – faith communities speaking out
— Structure and governance
— Making best use of your premises
— Monitoring and evaluation
— Working in partnership with others
— Mentoring, coaching and reflective practice
— Social enterprise

Topics we are unable to offer this time will be offered at future
events.

In addition, there will be question and discussion sessions, time for
networking and the official launch of the Faiths Forum for London.
