Overview

A database is defined as a collection of data although the term is often used in a confusing manner. Some people will use the term to refer to the data itself, some to the application that the data is interacted with through and some to the specialised software that manages the storage and querying of the data. Databases are used to store and organise a variety of data within voluntary organisations, from accounts to contacts to details of fundraising.

The software that manages the actual storage and queries on behalf of the application is known as a Database Management System (DBMS). The application typically sends requests to the DBMS in the form of queries written in SQL, Structured Query Language.
